When considering installing air conditioning, it is imperative that the size / output of the unit is sufficient, as otherwise problems will arise. The major criteria that determine the required size are:

Size of the room (floor area)
Ceiling height
Insulation material (if any) used
Wall construction of the building (e.g. brick, weatherboard, timber, etc)
Roof type
Orientation and shading of windows

A quick guide to calculate the size of your air conditioner
As a very rough guide, allow 1.5 kw for every 10 m2 of floor area. For example, a 40m2 floor area requires a 6.0 kw unit.
